New Orleans (Halfway There): September 2, 2010

Highlights from today: (click here for pictures)

We are usually rushed on school mornings but today we were especially in a hurry since we had to finish loading the car for the trip.  But the kids seemed to know and were very helpful in getting their clothes on.  Graham has been asking if we were leaving for the trip each time we have gotten in the car for a week was very excited to see us put the suitcases in the trunk.  He was excited until we had to tell him that school was first!

Reagan turned in her homework and told her teacher that she would be gone on Tuesday.  Mom was impressed to hear her speak out loud to her teacher-maybe she is coming out of her shell.  Anderson, who always pauses going into his class, walked right in this morning even though they had a sub.  Later he told Mom that he knew his teacher (Ms. Jennifer) from when she talked to Cubbie Bear-that is why he didn’t mind going into his class.  He was probably expecting Cubbie to pop out any time and talk with Jennifer.

Graham didn’t fuss this morning when Robby dropped him off!  They have been practicing saying “bye bye Daddy” for weeks and it seems to be paying off.  Campbell did excellent as always.  After work, Mom ran to pick up Anderson and Reagan.  Reagan had spent her morning in the writing center.  She had made so many pictures that Ms. Stacy had to staple them in 3 different bunches-seriously.  I asked her if she had played in any other centers and she said no!  We will have to start working on diversifying.

We then ran home and added a few more things to the car, including the ice chest, and went to pick up Graham and Campbell.  Graham hadn’t yet napped and was laying on his mat and Campbell had just woken up.  Then we were on the road to pick up Robby.  We had to wait a few minutes for him-we actually waited just long enough for Campbell to have a diaper explosion for me to clean up!

It rained on us until we were just outside of town and then things cleared up.  Our intentions were to pick up lunch in Pine Bluff-especially since Tara had forgotten to feed Reagan and Anderson lunch.  They did have an apple so they weren’t technically starving.  We made it to McGee (or maybe Dumas) and found a Sonic.  After a bathroom break and waiting forever for our hamburgers, we were on our way again.  The kids were hungry-they all ate their 1/2 of the hamburger and fries.

The kids so enjoyed seeing the big tractors and we saw plenty of them.  We even saw a huge combiner driving down the road!  Also, we pointed out the cotton plants and then they kept referring to them as “cotton ball plants.”  We have read about the Lake Pontchartrain bridge being the longest in the world-but they were pretty impressed with the Lake Village bridge!  Before long we arrived in Canton, Mississippi and checked onto our hotel.

There is probably 8 hotels on this strip and we though we would be the only ones here tonight but it has filled up.  We drove around the square-which seems to have been redone but also still needs lots of work.  Then we drove the other way looking for supper and then we drove another way-the kids were getting restless so we did find a Pizza Hut to eat at.  The service was horrible-which was especially surprising since we were the only ones in the restaurant.  But the food was delicious-the kids all had 2 pieces and then we devoured a chocolate pizza!  Campbell even got in on the act and ate pasta for her supper.

Back at the hotel, we changed into our pajamas and started getting ready for the next day and getting ready for bed.  Graham’s pack n play fits in the bathroom so he is snoozing in there.  Campbell is in her bouncy in the closet area.  Reagan was getting her sleeping bag fixed under the desk and then decided to sleep with Anderson.  Anderson asked Robby if he could sleep on the couch and Robby said yes and asked if he wanted him to make it into a bed.  Anderson has never seen a sleeper sofa and had no idea what Robby was doing.  His eyes were huge-he crawled on and Reagan quickly joined him.  The plan tomorrow is to head to the aquarium in New Orleans.
