Road Trip Day 7-Hernando Ms to Little Rock AR

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

Hotel Dennie had wonderful accommodations for us last night and we all slept very well-except for Graham needing a few bottles and Anderson rolling all over the floor! Once while Graham was crying, Reagan woke up and said "I thought we were in the car because it sounded like it." Graham must have cried quite a bit in the car for her to say that!

After breakfast, we attempted a kid group picture-we didn't have too much luck! But it was entertaining. Since we didn't want our vacation to end to early, we had one more stop in mind. Tara had never been to Graceland so that is where we headed. The crowds weren't bad so we didn't have to wait long for our bus ride across the street. Anderson and Reagan were so excited about getting to ride the bus. We toured the house and the rest of the complex. We were able to catch a glimpse of Priscilla giving the stable tour (this was the first day of the stable tours).

The highlight of the visit was looking up and seeing Anderson standing on Elvis' grave-yep, he snuck through the fence trying to put his hand in the water fountain and ended up in the Presley family graveyard. His sister was right behind him! Anderson saw the pool and said "No swim today, Elvis swim today." Reagan and Anderson loved seeing Elvis' planes-that was a big hit. Graham slept through the planes and most of the way home. Reagan was so excited to see that Elvis had a pink and a purple car.

We had thought about going to the zoo but the weather was warm and we decided that we could save that for another trip. We got on the road and made it to Lonoke before everyone woke up from their naps. After some McDonald's ice cream we were back on the road and home be mid-afternoon. We are unpacked and up to our ears in laundry.

Reagan is sleeping with her door shut tonight, Graham is not going to get a bottle tonight and Anderson has fallen asleep without his paci (it just took a few more hours, bribes of lollipops, extra cups of milk and lots of trucks to sleep with)

Road Trip Day 6-Montgomery AL to Hernando MS

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

Everyone was in our bed by 7:30 this morning so we were on the road fairly early. In Montgomery, we drove by the State Capitol and the Governor's Mansion. We drove past the Hank Williams statue but Robby was expecting something much larger after the chair, chicken and peanut so we didn't stop for a picture!

When we were leaving Montgomery, it rained and rained. We fought the rain most of the day long but it would always slack off before we had to get out of the car. We made it to Birmingham a little bit before lunch time. Our final hot dog stop of the trip was Pete's Famous Hot Dogs. The place was so small the the kids and I couldn't even go in. Robby squeezed in and ordered our hot dogs-he didn't know the lingo so they all came with chili and sauerkraut. We ate outside in front of the McWane Science Center. There was a fountain and a moving sculpture above us to keep everyone entertained. Also, just inside the door was a wind tunnel to play with (which the kids were a bit afraid of) along with a restroom for all of us.

After a few more hours on the road, we thought we would drive to the Tupelo National Battlefield. We did drive to it, saw the sign but couldn't find it-until we realized that the sign was the battlefield and that was all that there was-a one acre monument! We were glad we had not drive 20 miles out of our way to see the Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield. We did stop at the Natchez Trace visitor center after driving along the famed parkway. The kids enjoyed running around the exhibits at the visitor center before getting back in the car.

Soon we were nearing Hernando MS and finally about to see Josh and Zach. Anderson had asked about every 5 minutes where Josh and Zach where. Their ballgames were rained out so we had pizza here. Anderson was so excited to play with the boys and Reagan enjoyed it too (when she was not being chased by a power ranger)!

Road Trip Day 5-Atlanta GA to Montgomery AL

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

Robby loaded the car while we finished our breakfast this morning. Our first stop this morning was in Warm Springs to tour Roosevelt's Little White House. The museum and grounds were very impressive. We walked through his house and even had our picture taken with the President himself. After leaving Warm Springs, we had a quick lunch at Krystals in Columbus, GA.

Plains, Georgia was our next adventure. We toured Jimmy Carter's school, the train depot and drove past his current church where he teaches Sunday School occasionally. The highlight of Plains for the kids was taking their picture with the big peanut. Anderson and Reagan could not understand why that peanut didn't have eyes. We ended our Carter tour at his boyhood home which is a part of the Carter National Historic Site also. When we got out of the car there, we discovered that Graham had taken the lid off of his bottle and was drenched with formula. He seemed quite proud of himself but his mood quickly changed when we rinsed him off with water from our water bottle (out of the ice chest-that is all that we had and it had to be done).

A few miles down the road was Andersonville National Historic Site which houses a National Cemetery and the National Prisoner of War Museum. Anderson thought the name of this place was funny and Reagan was busy looking for her name somewhere. They were closing soon so we did a quick drive by and a quick walk through the museum. As we were leaving, the lady came out to give Reagan and Anderson junior ranger badgers-and they were quite proud of them.

Speaking of badges, Robby saw a real one. We might have been going a little fast on this holiday weekend and were stopped by one of Georgia's finest. Thankfully, we were only given a warning and told to slow down. Needless to say, 55 is very slow and it added a little bit of travel time to our day! After a few hours in the car and at some bathroom stop on the way, we discovered that Anderson's pants were wet-because he wasn't wearing a diaper (and we are still not sure how that happened). After a quick change, we were back on the road.

The Tuskegee Airmen National Site and the Tuskegee Institute were closed but since we figured it would be a while before we came back to Tuskegee, we decided to drive by them anyway. We even jumped out at Booker T. Washington's house to snap a few photos. It was only 20 more miles to our hotel and the kids were glad to get out of the car. We walked around the courtyard of this Courtyard Mariott. The boys had baths and they needed it and Reagan had a shower before everyone fell asleep.

We ended up spending around 8 hours in the car today and the kids did surprisingly well-Graham was unhappy with Mom the last hour since she was out of formula and tried to give him apple juice instead.

Reagan said her favorite part of the trip was "3 hotels." Anderson said his favorite part was the ballgame and Graham's favorite part has been getting out of the car seat. Josh and Zach's house is tomorrow and Reagan and Anderson can hardly wait!

Road Trip Day 4- Atlanta GA

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

(Links from yesterday's videos - at bottom)

We woke up slowly again this morning but were at the Georgia Aquarium by 8:30 and we even scored some 3 dollar parking. The kids so enjoyed the aquarium. There was even a whale slide for them to slide down-Mom and Dad even did it. The fish were plentiful and huge-unlike the crowds so it made for a perfect morning. After the aquarium, we walked back to Olympic Park to spend a few minutes on the playground. We were back in the car next for lunch.

We first drove to the Silver Skillet but they were closed for Memorial Day weekend. So our second choice was the Flying Biscuit. The wait was over an hour but it was well worth it. We began our meal with a half dozen of their famous biscuits (for the children, just for the children). Next we all split the love cakes, the black bean and chicken enchiladas and the biscuits, eggs and gravy. Needless to say, it was delicious and we were stuffed. The kids rested a bit on our drive to the Kennesaw National Battlefield Park. We walked along a trail while waiting for the cannon firing demonstration. Everyone was ready with their fingers in their ears for the cannon firing but Anderson was still a little unprepared for the noise. After the first cannon firing he whined a bit but when he figured out they were going to do it again, he cried and cried. (click here for video - can you hear Anderson?) We stayed and watched anyway and he eventually calmed down after a few Skittles. Reagan was a little scared and Graham did cry the second time but quickly calmed when given his bottle.

After the battlefield, we headed to Marietta to see the big chicken. I will bet that you have never seen a KFC like this one-I even bought a Christmas tree ornament. The next stop was the Big Trees Forest Preserve. Reagan woke up and was ready for a walk and Graham slept in the stroller. We made a short loop around the preserve and chased a few squirrels and birds. On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by the Governor's Mansion. It was in a beautiful neighborhood but not one of the prettier houses. Since their was a Cheesecake Factory nearby, we felt obligated to stop by and say hello. Robby ran in a picked up a Key Lime cheesecake for him and a Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookie Dough piece for Tara. We were even able to make it back to the hotel before eating them and they were delicious. Oddly enough, Reagan and Anderson didn't seem to interested in our cheesecakes-Graham on the other hand, definetely has a sweet tooth.

Next on the agenda, was repacking, laundry and a little hot tubbing. The pool was outdoors and it was very cold. So we convinced everyone that the hot tub was just their size and a perfect choice. Reagan could barely touch the bottom so she felt like a big girl and Anderson enjoyed being able to walk around on the steps. Graham just sat in his buggy and watched until it was time to go in. After baths, more laundry and more repacking the boys are in bed and Reagan is winding down. We plan on getting an early start in the morning and heading to Warm Springs, GA.

Road Trip Day 3-Atlanta GA

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

We all must have been tired this morning because we all slept until 8 this morning. Robby had to bring our breakfast upstairs since we were running a little behind. After parking we walked throught the CNN studio. Reagan was very disappointed that we weren't able to ride the longest escalator in the world but we did manage to ride a few short escalators before heading on. Our plan was to go to the Aquarium first this morning but the World of Coke was having a special deal on tickets ($2) so that was our first stop. The kids weren't to impressed with the memorabilia but the tasting room was the highlight for them. We watched the 4D movie-the kids all wore their glasses great but once the chairs started moving Reagan covered her ears and eyes and Anderson started to whine. Tara tried to hold on to Graham-he might have been a little frightened too since his eyes were huge!

After the World of Coke, we walked towards the Aquarium but since the line was so incredibly long we opted for plan B-ikea next and the Aquarium tomorrow. On our way back to the van, we stopped at Olympic Park for the kids to play in the fountain. Reagan eventually got into it but Anderson was timid most of the time. He did think it was entertaining that he used the restroom in the fountains! Graham slept through the whole event. He even slept through Robby's scream when he didn't time jumping over the fountains well enough and got his shorts very wet. The kids needed some downtime so we drove past the Georgia State Capitol and jumped out for a picture.

We were hoping to easily find Fat Matt's Rib Shack but we had to do a little bit of searching even with the GPS. It was well worth the search. The line was long but there were a few seats available in the cramped restaurant. One man was playing the guitar and singing the blues and another was playing the harmonica. The kids ate it up-the music and the food. Reagan enjoyed the beans and BBQ. Anderson was thrilled when Rob brought back mac and cheese to the table and Graham ate everything Mom would give him-his favorite was the pecan pie.

IKEA was the next stop-the reason for the trip! We made good time through the store. Reagan found a cat (which is quite unattractive!), Anderson bought a train, Graham will get a truck (which Anderson will love), Tara bought cups, comforters for the boys, a lamp, lightbulbs, a nightlight, plastic containers and maybe a few other things. Robby found a bunkbed and great travel picture-which both wouldn't fit in the van. We will just have to find us another IKEA when we have an empty car. After some hot cinnamon rolls, we headed back to the hotel.

At the hotel, we unloaded and reloaded while the kids relaxed for a little bit. After a few bottles, Graham finally calmed down and hopefully has gone to sleep (until someone has to go to the bathroom). Anderson and Reagan are laying in front of the tv watching Martha Speaks and it is about to be lights out. We have an early morning since we are planning on being at the Aquarium at opening (8 am).

Road Trip Day 2-Jasper AL to Atlanta GA

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

We all rested well-despite everyone stirring a few times during the night. Breakfast at the hotel before hitting the road again. Our first stop was in Birmingham at the Kelly Ingram Park. Everyone enjoyed walking around the civil rights statues. We were able to find the World's Largest Chair much easier than we were able to find our last giant tourist attraction, Randy's Donuts in LA. But Anderson didn't understand why there weren't donuts at the large chair.

It drizzled on us off and on most of the day but it didn't slow us down much. We were soon in Atlanta and had lunch at the Varsity. The shouted "What'll ya have? What'll ya have" at Robby and he ordered so quickly he came to the table with a few surprises! The hot dogs were delicious but Robby had a chili cheeseburger-which was chili and cheese on a hamburger bun (without a hamburger patty) and he really enjoyed it. Everyone (especially Anderson) enjoyed the chocolate milkshake and frozen orange crush. After lunch, we headed to the Martin Luther King National Historic Site. We saw Ebenezer Baptist Church, a restored fire station and King's birthplace. The kids enjoyed the walk and we almost walked to the Carter Library but decided to drive at the last minute.

The Carter Library would have been our last presidential library to see-but it was closed for renovations. We knew this but still decided to walk around the grounds. The grounds were pretty and the gardens would have been prettier if we could have found them. Oh, well, we have to come back anyway. After the library, we fought a little bit of traffic to head to our hotel, Marriott Fairfield Inn. We have a nice room and even have room to put Graham's pack 'n play in the bathroom!

After unpacking a little, we were off to the Atlanta Braves game. The weather was still drizzling occasionally, so we never mentioned it to the kids until we got out of the car. We decided to chance it. After buying tickets, we found seats which were covered and on the very last row of the very last level. The game was delayed for a few minutes due to the rain but it started and the kids had a blast. Anderson and Reagan ate all of their corndogs and Graham ate more of mine. We split a bag of peanuts while Anderson clapped and cheered and Reagan danced. Graham sat in his stroller and took it all in. After watching a few innings, Mom was getting chilly and the kids were getting antsy. We walked carefully down the many, many steps and found our next event. The kids had an area where they could run down the baseline and step on homeplate. (click here to see video #1) Anderson would go first and run as fast as he could down the baseline while waving at Mom or Dad (whoever was standing at the end) and Reagan was not far behind him running as fast as she could in her sandals. She would have to push Anderson off of homeplate so the next kids could keep running. We heard "one more?" and even said "one more" a few times! They were able to run about 5 times and were soon getting tired. (click here for see video #2)

We obviously left the ball game early. On the walk back to the car, Anderson told Mom "hold me, long day." And while in the car, Reagan said "I think I will sleep well tonight." And that she is along with Graham. Now Anderson, on the other hand, is army crawling across the hotel floor as I type. He thinks we can't see him!

Road Trip Day 1-Little Rock to Jasper, AL

Highlights from today: (click here for the pictures)

We began our Thursday in the usual way-Reagan and Anderson to school with Dad, Graham over to Nonna and Pop's house and Mom to work. The kids were pretty excited this morning and new our trip was coming up soon. The van was loaded and Mom picked everyone up and we headed out of town around 3. We stopped in Olive Branch MS for a bathroom break and then pressed on to Tupelo. The kids are great car rider and we only watched 50 movies and even sang a few verses of Old MacDonald. Reagan and Anderson did disapprove of Robby's music at one time and covered their ears with their hands-so Robby was forced to wear the headphones. In Tupelo we walked around the birthplace of Elvis Presley. A car similar to his was there along with his home and church. We even decided to have a picnic supper there on the site. The kids enjoyed the fountain, swing and running in the grass. We were back in the car and made it to Jasper AL before making a mandatory stop for gas. Our hotel, the Jameson Inn, was only a few blocks away. Our room is on the first floor and Graham was more than ready to call it a night. After baths for the kids, everyone is laying quietly-well, except Anderson who is having trouble settling down now that he is able to sleep in his sleeping bag and not in a pack n play.

Den: coughing to much and Mom and Dad wanted him closer so they could hear him 3. Living Room: he kept kicking the pack n play and moving his feet which made odd noises which would wake up Mom and Dad but they didn't know what it was since he was still too far away 4. Bathroom: slept peacefully until Dad had to take a shower this morning

  • Graham, Anderson and Reagan all sleeping peacefully-even Reagan who left her taggie at school! (Ms. Lisa wasn't there and Mom just assumed it was in the bag. Reagan cried when Mom told her it was at school but didn't even mention it at bedtime-maybe because she has 13 other animals in bed wtih her)
