I'm swinging!
  • Campbell joined Robby and I in our spot in the living room last night.  We were sleeping in there because the paint fumes from our room was just too much.  She had cried a few times and again complained of her ear.  She also kept telling me that the sun was in her eyes and since I couldn't really solve that problem I just brought her down to sleep with us.
  • Most everyone stirred before I did this morning but I eventually had to wake Reagan up for breakfast.  Everyone else was getting antsy and ready to eat.  I have started reading them "Mr. Popper's Penguins" and they are so into it.  Graham even asked for me not to read any while he is spending the night at Nonna's house tomorrow.
  • We really didn't do a whole lot today and it was just wonderful.  The painters were here early this morning, the repairman came for my windshield and the schwann's man came.  I bought orange push ups because that was my favorite treat from the ice cream man when I was little.  After he left, we all sat on the front porch and had us one.
  • The kids acted out The 3 Little Pigs, they colored some, played legos in the bathroom (whatever keeps them busy), watched a movie, we played go fish and candyland (which Campbell played along), read a few library books and then had lunch...no wonder I was tired this afternoon.
  • We did have a later lunch so the afternoon did fly by.  Keaton wasn't happy about me putting her down for her afternoon nap and was quite for only a bit before she woke up and started fussing again.  Anderson saw the neighbor boys outside so he bolted outside.  I feel like I need to be outside when he isn't in our yard so Keaton and I went out and then I woke Campbell up to join us.  By the time Robby made it home, everyone was outside playing.
  • We had supper out there and I ran to church for a bit to decorate for VBS.  The kids had showers while I was gone, a bedtime snack and everyone went to bed without too much of a fuss.  Robby told me that the girls were waiting up on me-I forgot about going up there and they are probably asleep by now!

Cowgirls got their catch...

  • Campbell woke up around 3 and when I went up there she was standing in her bed screaming "I want my mommy."  So I just brought her down to our bed.  She tossed and turned for a long while and finally told me her ear hurt (and she also complained of it tonight).  She was the only one up this morning when Robby was getting ready to leave and I was in the shower.  She did better than I thought she would seeing him go.  Graham was the one today saying "I didn't get to give him a hug."
  • Yesterday, as Robby was getting ready for work Campbell laid in my bed asking "Daddy lay back by me?" so of course Robby had to lay by her for a few minutes before leaving.  And now at nap time she cries "I want a kiss from my Daddy" and is only pacified when I tell her that I will send him up when he gets home-though by that time she is already awake from her nap.
  • Everyone went to Nonna's house this morning while I went to work and then ran a few errands (and why oh why did people want to talk to me today-this must have been "national elderly people randomly talk to Tara day"-one man wanted to chat about a weather radio and then a wrong number asked me to "hang on a minute" while she told me who she was calling and what their numbers were.  I was as kind as I could be but twice in one day-kind of odd!)
  • Anyway, the kids seemed pretty calm at Nonna's house when I left and were just as calm when I picked them up. They played with some new blocks (which are actually 34+ years old), lincoln logs, new strawberry shortcakes (again 34 years old), cars and even played outside.  I sent some paint over for them to do but they didn't even have time for that.  We had lunch over there and then headed home.
  • At home, Campbell had her nap and Keaton soon did too.  Reagan, Anderson and Graham read a story, did a workbook page, played Monopoly Jr (which lasts forever), worked on Awana verses, practiced some sight words, sang a timeline song and worked on skip counting.  (Anyone got any clues on how to memorize skip counting?  I need to find a song or two.  We never memorized that in school so I am clueless about how to do it in a fun way)
  • Soon everyone was outside-wearing cowboy hats, boots and tying Anderson up to a tree with a rope.  He started the whole deal so he was actually instruct them on how to wrap him up.  We let them play with the rope until it ended up around someone's neck and then it was put up. It was so pleasant outside this evening.
  • Then showers were next followed by supper.  Grannymom and Grandpa even came over to see everyone.  The kids worked hard on making hats for a very noisy parade right before Grannymom and Grandpa left.  Then we did everyone's monthly video and pictures.  And I don't mean to brag but my Grahammy can name just about all of the states that we went to-pretty impressive for a little 3 year old.

Getting her "cheese" on...
  • Keaton and everyone else slept great last night-we slept all the way until 8 when we heard Graham and Campbell on the monitor.  Robby got up and hurried along when he saw that what time it really was.  We had gotten so used to being in vacation mode that we didn't even think about setting an alarm clock.
  • We had our breakfast and did a little bit of work this morning when Jodee and Kennedy came over.  Kennedy played with everyone and then ended up getting to stay all day to play.  Anderson so wanted to go back to Jodee's house and play and just cried when I told him he couldn't!
  • The kids entertained themselves most of the morning long.  They played "family" pretty much all day long-I was once told I was the old lady, I was also the waitress and at one time I think I was the matador watching over a bull.  After I had seen no less than 30 different dress up dresses come up and down the stairs, I made everyone pick up. After that we read a story and had lunch.
  • Reagan and Kennedy played family most of the afternoon without the boys.  Anderson, who was in such a hurry to go to his toys this morning, lost interest in the girls "family" play and went back to his toys.  Graham stuck with them a little bit longer but also joined his brother except when I pulled the paints out.
  • Keaton did so well getting back on her schedule today-she did great going to sleep for both of her naps...or maybe it was just so noisy in the house I couldn't hear her crying.  She also almost pulled up on the fireplace today.  Pulling up is great but I sure didn't want her to do it at the fireplace.
  • My grand plan was to send the kids outside after lunch but that is when it started getting dark and eventually storming.  The thunder was loud enough that Reagan asked where we go if the thunder go too loud (tornado).  The afternoon flew by and before long Jodee was back picking Kennedy up and bringing some Key Lime Pie (which the kids had for dessert and then Anderson cleaned up what Robby and I hadn't already eaten).
  • Baths for everyone-half before supper and the other half after supper.  And then it was bedtime-this real life stuff is tiring.  Vacations are so much easier!

Road Trip 2012-Rogers, AR to Little Rock, AR (6/3/2012)

Look Mom, I'm standing up .. with a little help!
Last night when Robby was taking everything out of the roof bag, he wondered aloud if it would rain.  But then decided that it wouldn't and that he wasn't even going to zip the bag up.  And since he was so hot from the unload, he only buckled two of the straps down. Who would have thought that it might rain?  Well, at 5:30 the rain and thunder must have woken Keaton up.  And I am talking RAIN and THUNDER!  So much that Robby checked the weather and I laid in bed thinking about which kid I would need to grab first if the window was to blow out.  Needless to say, the morning started off with a very wet roof bag!
After we all stirred and while I finished getting ready, Robby went out to dry the bag.  He just did a few loops in the hotel parking lot while frequently slamming on his brakes!  That certainly got the water out quickly.  We debated not even using it on the way home but we really didn't want Reagan to have to sit with a suitcase in her lap for 4 hours, so we strapped that baby down one last time for this road trip.
Not a whole lot happened on the drive.  I was driving at one point and Robby had to crawl in the back to do something-I think work on a wire.  Graham was none to pleased about this.  He told Robby "I don't like your bottom in my face."  We made our first stop of the trip our last stop of the trip as well-Braums.  Actually the kids and I pottied inside while Robby and Keaton drove through the drive through and ordered us all shakes (the diet starts tomorrow! ha!)
We made it to Little Rock and dropped all of the kids off at Grannymom and Grandpa's house.  They played outside, inside, had a snack and were pretty worn out when we came to collect them.
When we made it home, Anderson saw the neighbor boys out playing so he went over to their house for a bit.  Robby said that you wish you could just keep them in a bubble as Anderson walked over there.  And that is so true but soon Graham was going over there too which made me feel better-he is my little spy!  I asked him what was happening? what they were doing? what was said? and he reported back to me.  Actually the neighbor boys spend most of the time looking a worms in the dirt while Anderson rode their scooter and jumped on their trampoline.
Before too long, both boys were back over here eating ice cream and then waiting on Nonna and Pops to arrive.  Campbell had fallen asleep on the way home from Grannymom's house and I couldn't wake her up for anything so she just laid in the floor sleeping until 6.  Reagan spent her afternoon playing with her American Girl and her new doll clothes.
After supper, Nonna, Pops and Jason all came over to see the kids for a few minutes.  The kids were so excited to see them and were so proud to show off how they could name all of the starts that we went to.  When everyone Nonna and Pops left, we put the kids to bed and everyone went to sleep fairly well-except poor Keaton.  She is back to the real world now-going to bed with the others and sleeping all night.  Though she wasn't too pleased with that schedule when I put her down!  Wish her luck tonight-it will be a long night for her!

Road Trip 2012-Kansas City, MO to Rogers, AR (6/2/2012)

Riding the Three Trails in Independence, MO
Another later start this morning but that was fine and everyone enjoyed a little extra sleep-especially Keaton who slept all night long.  We went down for breakfast and the hotel was still crazy full.  It was so full and nuts in the breakfast area, that Robby said he should start asking if there are groups staying at the hotels he books.  We stood looking pitiful long enough that someone gave up their seats for us and then we started fighting the mobs to gather our food.  Even though it was so crazy, we were still able to find enough food for all of us.
After breakfast, Robby went to the room to load the stuff on the cart and I took the kids to the potty and headed to the car.  As we were walking to the car the boys went out of the door before me.  A lady started to ask them if they were waiting on their mom as I walked out the door.  She didn't see me coming and was just being polite...there is just such a difference between people in the South.  Seriously, we are so much politer down here.  A man who had been watching us unload the roof bag in Kansas City walked over and helped.  People comment on the kids.  We hold the doors open for each other.  Ah, not yet home but it already feels like we are home just being in the South.
Oh the weather today was perfect.  It was warm and sunny when we loaded the car.  Could not have been any better for the last full day of the trip.  I am actually looking forward to blazing hot weather-I have been so cold for more of our trip. Today was the first day in a long time that I didn't use the seat warmer.  Well, I did use it for a few minutes but then turned it off!
Our first stop this morning was the town square in Independence.  As we were walking to the Truman visitor's center, we saw a covered wagon tour.  Robby knew that I had been wanting to do one so he got a brochure.  We could tell the tour man was good so we took the long tour.  It lasted about an hour and 45 minutes and when we told the kids we were going to ride on the covered wagon-their eyes lit up.  Anderson had just been saying "I wish, I just wish we could do that" while talking about the wagon.
The tour took us over parts of the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, discussed the Civil War and even had bits of Truman history in it.  Made me wish I knew more history and wonder how you can teach kids history that it sticks with them.  The guide was good with the kids and talked to them so they understood some things but he was also informative so Robby and I felt like we learned something.  The kids sat perfectly still-Anderson by Robby, Reagan by me, Campbell mostly by me and Graham mostly by Robby while Keaton sat in the stroller between us all.  We were the only ones on the tour. It was really so much fun.  At the end the guide offered to let the kids set up front with him and hold the horses reins.  Look at Campbell who never smiles on cue for pictures-see her smiling ear to ear.
We went in the Truman visitor center next.  They had one spot left for a tour of the Truman home and Robby had been wanting to go in the house for awhile so he snapped that ticket up.  The kids probably couldn't have done well in the house even though it is just a 15 minute tour.  And since the tours are limited to 8 and we are 7 we probably would have had to wait awhile.
We walked around the town square and they were having an antique car show which just added to the small town ambiance of the day.  Then we had lunch at a pizza place on the square.  Next it was time for Robby to go to his tour so he took us to a little park the kids had seen while on our ride.  There was a wagon trail museum just down the block and around the corner that we were going to go and look out the wagons outside after playing.  Of course just about as soon as Robby drove off Graham decided that he had to potty (not the pottying that can be done in the grass).  He soon forgot about that and played while I changed Keaton, Campbell and then Keaton again.  By then Graham had to go soon so we headed to the museum.
I was busy praying that they would let us use their restrooms since we weren't going through but they were very kind and let all of us traipse through there so they could potty.  Once back outside, we walked around a nearby train station museum, looked an old carriage and an old stagecoach.  And by that time, Anderson said that he needed to go and potty (again not the pottying that can be done behind a tree) so I did what any mom would do-checked my watch to see when Robby was going to be back.  He was soon back but I still ended taking Anderson back into that same museum to potty again.
Oh, yes, as we were waiting on Robby, an older couple drove up to the museum.  They had a dog in their car bouncing around.  Anderson waited until the woman and man were out of the car when he announced "that old man looks like his dog."  I just walked away like I didn't know the kid!
After Robby showed back up, we pottied, took some pictures and then went to sonic for a drink.  We had heard police sirens but thought nothing of it. Then we were pulling out of the parking lot and I was busy calling names and passing out drinks when Robby said something or made some type of noises.  I looked up and not 30 feet from the van was two police officers jumping out of the cars and pulling their guns on a man.  He had something in a bag and they circled him and then pushed him to the ground with their guns still drawn.  I had expected Robby to drive off so we would not get hit by any possible stray bullets (it was on my side) but we just sat there and watched it all go down (nothing was happening on his side so I guess he thought he was safe).   We didn't leave until the man was handcuffed, 10 more police cars arrived and until the kids were well exposed to a "cops" show like experience.
On the way to Rogers, Robby and I tried to decide what we wanted to do after Disney this year.  No need to go to Savannah/Charleston again, too hot to go to the beach, to far to drive to Key West, covered Atlanta pretty good.  We finally decided on maybe a Civil War battlefield since Reagan will be talking about that in school or maybe Space Camp and the Unclaimed Baggage Center.  But none of those really excites us right now so who knows-any suggestions?
We also debated briefly if we should just drive a few more hours and get home.  Of course we wouldn't have been home until around 10 and that would just mean Robby and I would stay up crazy late unpacking and since we had told the kids we would swim, we did stop at our hotel when we made it to Rogers.
Our bit of excitement in the car this afternoon was when a big mosquito eating type bug appeared in the car.  Reagan and Anderson would squeal "Mommy, Mommy" and then forget about it all and watch the movie and then we would hear them squeal again.  Finally I had to go and kill that bug for them-and they thought it was incredible cool there was a little bug leg left on the ceiling of the car when I was finished.
At the hotel, we unpacked and started our laundry.  Then we all went swimming-we had told the kids that we would swim and we did.  But it was cold, cold, cold in that pool.  We were finally able to enjoy it and they had a blast jumping in and letting us catch them.  We ended by all setting in the hot tub.  Then back to the room for showers and supper (at 8:30)-we are city folk now, eating late!
During their supper, Robby turned on a Backyardigans for the kids.  I said a few days ago that it was like crack for kids.  But I seriously, think that if I ever hear another Backyardigans I am going to jump out of the car!!  I need some earplugs!

Road Trip 2012-Des Moines, IA to Kansas City, MO (6/1/2012)

Take me out to the ballgame.. KC Royals!
The first thing that I remember from this morning is Keaton crying and Anderson telling me "I think I did that."  I jumped up to get her some milk and then Graham left Robby's bed to come to our bed.  I quickly told him to go back and lay down.  I seriously thought that it was 3 or 4 in the morning but just thought I might check the time to make sure-yep, it was 8:30.  I love hotel living and hotel curtains.
We did stir pretty quickly and Robby took the kids to the breakfast area to pick out their food.  The breakfast area was too small to handle our brood so we just ate in the room.  That was fine since it was quicker and we left at 9:54 a.m.  And the total miles from yesterday was 282 miles.  Robby told me what our total mileage is so far and it is pretty unbelievable.  I will save that little tidbit for another post though.
After leaving the hotel, we had to get gas and then we drove by the capitol.  Anderson continues to sneeze before and during nearly every picture that we try to take.  Oddest thing.  The kids didn't get to run on the grounds so they were a bit disappointed.  After a few more miles, Robby had to make a pit stop and we watched and waited for him.  Graham was teasing and said "there's Daddy" talking about a man with a beard.  Anderson replied with "that's not Daddy.  If he had a beard he wouldn't get to kiss anymore."  What?  Where did this come from?
Some time while in the car today, Anderson said "I am ready to go to Arkansas."  We watched some Hallmarkish horse movie on the way Missouri.  It must not have been too exciting for Graham because he said "can we watch some football?"  We all must have been too preoccupied with the movie because when the state signs came near, I wasn't ready.  I was able to get Missouri's sign but we needed to get Iowa's sign as well.  Robby thought about turning around illegally (as he did in North Dakota) but I nixed that idea since there was traffic (none in North Dakota).  But I did manage to get a good shot of the back of the Iowa sign so that will have to work.
We ate at Jack Stacks for barbecue when we made it to Kansas City.  It was very good but we ordered way, way too much.  We could have fed a family of 14 with all of the food that we received.  Though Anderson, my non meat eater, did eat quite a bit of his sandwich.  After lunch, we saw some fountains around town and then went to the Hallmark visitor center.
We pulled into a parking garage to park and Robby was getting a ticket from the machine when he heard someone holler at him.  It was a worker man on a golf cart.  The man said that we were too tall for the garage and quite possible we were (roof bag remember)  Robby took the ticket and started wondering if he was going to have to pay to turn around while I was studying the ceiling making sure that we could turn around safely.  We drove until the curb ended and then turned around and then we heard a loud kerplunk!  Oh, my!  I didn't see what happened but the golf cart followed us in the garage and the parking entry arm crashed down on him (don't worry, he had a roof).  Of course our first thought was that we hit the ceiling, then we wondered if we had done that and then we just wanted to get out of their quickly.  We did zoom out quickly knowing that we had not been the ones to hit or break anything!
Robby decided that it would be best to drop us off and then he came to meet us.  We did the Hallmark visitor's center.  It didn't take too long to go through and the kids enjoyed pushing the button to make a bow.  We even watched the movie at the end of the tour-they are all getting big enough to do that now.  Reagan takes everything in and is so serious about things-wonder where she gets that?  When we left the kids all had their booklet with stamps in it from the tour, the bow they made, a bag of artsy stuff from the place next door and we had postcards and some nice record your voice book (which I think is a bit creepy).
After that, we drove to the World War I monument.  We took a few pictures and the kids enjoyed walking up and down the steps.  They have a museum there but I don't think that the kids would find it that interesting yet.  We will have to put that on our list of things to do when we return to Kansas City.
Next up was checking into our hotel.  This hotel must be full of quite a few soccer teams so it is crazy.  They have a free light supper and it was so packed that there was no place to sit.  I did fight the crowds and make the kids a hot dog and Robby found them popcorn so they were tickled.  We had our traditional baseball game food before the game.
It wasn't far to the baseball game and I forgot to pack the juice boxes that we had gone to Walmart specifically to buy so I could smuggle them in the game.  Oh, well, it was fine since I still crackers and fruit snacks.  Anyway, Anderson made sure that Graham wore his baseball hat when they got out of the car.  They were so excited about the game.
Robby had our tickets on his phone and we were about to walk through when they wouldn't scan so he had to go and get printed tickets.  It didn't take too long and we were on our way to our seats.  Our seats could not have been any better-they were near the bathrooms, on the backrow so I could leave my stroller up, a short row so it was just us filling the whole row, under the deck above, completely blocked by the wind and near the concessions area so you could smell all of the food.  If I was a Royal's fan I would buy my season tickets right there.
The kids watched in awe-it was no Traveler's ballgame.  These fans were noisy!  Graham asked a zillion and a half questions and I or Robby had to narrate everything that was happening for him.  Anderson knew pretty much what was going on.  Keaton clapped and bounced watching Campbell clap along with the other fans.
We went on a walk around the stadium and the kids immediately saw a playground.  I let them go and slide for a few minutes and even though I could see most of them most of the time-It made me pretty nervous since it was just a wide open area.  They all returned to me though when they saw Robby walk back because he had just gone to buy tokens for them.
They had a few things you could do-mini golf, carousel, hit the ball & run the bases-and we let everyone pick something.  The boys picked hitting the baseball and the girls picked riding the carousel.  Anderson was the first to bat-the man through him four balls and he hit two of them.  And then he was able to run the bases around the little field.  Next up was Graham and he hit 3 of his 4 balls and ran the bases as well.  By this time Reagan had decided that is what she wanted to do and she was in line.  Reagan also hit the ball and ran the bases.  Of course, Campbell was not to be left out and she waltzed onto the field wearing that baseball hat that was way too big for her little head.  She must have been watching what everyone else did because she did pretty perfect for such a little girl.  They put the tee up for her and she smacked that ball each time.  Then she ran and ran (not so much on the bases).
Of course, no ballgame would be complete without 8 dollar cotton candy so they all shared that.  Robby thought about snow cones but they were 4 each and that would have been double the cotton candy.  Everyone was pleased and sticky with the cotton candy.  Keaton had her milk and fell asleep in her stroller after our walk.  We stayed until the beginning of the ninth inning and then we headed to the car.  By the time we loaded up, the stadium lights were dimmed and the fireworks were going off-so thankful we left when we did.  Could not imagine being in there with the kids with few lights and fireworks.  That would have sent Graham over the edge.
Poor Graham didn't have a nap today plus at the Hallmark place he fell and hurt is knee.  He must have bruised his knee cap or something because occasionally he will just scream and grab it.  Though he must not be hurt too bad because he could sure run the bases without a problem.  Campbell has a cold with a runny nose and a pretty bad cough.  Keaton and Anderson's excema is better though.  Reagan is fine and dandy and that concludes the Dennie health report.
Back at the hotel tonight, we let everyone have some coke and then we came up for bed.  We tucked them in and within five minutes everyone was sound asleep.  They were so tired!...I am too!
